British food sucks, right?

Britain is much maligned for its food. It's understandable. As someone who has spent years living in Asia, it is clear why. What us British think are 'big' flavours are definitely small in contrast to what constitutes 'big' flavours in Asia. We don't get that much regional variation either by comparison. Meat and two veg is such an uninspiring concept for a dish, yet it sadly remains at the heart of many restaurants from the unpretentious to the private clubs of west London.
At this point, will make a stand for British food though. Not the sort of stand where I end up dead on a hill, but a half-hearted defense. We have some excellent dishes that I would recommend to anyone; eclectic pies through to rib-sticking stews. And, our sandwich game is the best in the world, bar none.
It would be a lie to say that traditionally British food is behind my love for London's culinary scene though. London is among the most culturally diverse cities in the world. It's food reflects that. If you visited London in the mid-90s, you would have found a wealth of restaurants representing countries from around the world. These restaurants would have served you a ghost of the cuisine they claimed to represent. A version dumbed-down, de-chili-ed and blanched for the British market. This is not the case now. If you want food representative of that from Kerala, India, or Eritrea, or Georgia, or Jamaica, or Ecuador, or Morocco, or Sweden, or anywhere else for that matter it is here.
